In Western cultures like the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia, the first thing anyone suggests for weight loss is "burn those calories"—hit the treadmill, the exercise bike, or the streets. On the surface, this makes sense, right? After all, running, sweating, and breathing heavily must be melting pounds like crazy… or is it?

Surprisingly, this is wrong. While cardio does burn calories and light cardio can promote a healthy heart, heavy cardio can actually have the opposite effect. It’s hard on your knees, feet, and even your heart, leading to scar tissue and a higher risk of heart attack over time.

Even more surprising? Excessive cardio can actually make weight loss harder. When you overwork your body with intense cardio or starve it with extreme diets, it switches to survival mode. Instead of burning fat, it conserves it—and even begins burning muscle for energy.

Think about prehistoric humans. If they burned through all their energy reserves chasing food, they’d have starved. But they didn’t, because our bodies are genetically programmed to store energy as fat to survive scarcity. In modern times, food scarcity isn’t a problem, but this survival mechanism remains.

It’s not just about "calories in, calories out," as many diets and fitness gurus claim. Calories are simply a measure of energy, but real, sustainable weight loss is about working with your body, not against it.
